The Permanent Laser Hair
Removal Process Explained

When it comes to the laser hair removal process do you know what to expect?

Not exactly, huh? I didn't think so. But why should you? It's not something we do everyday. Plus the entire laser hair removal approach to eliminate unwanted body hair is relatively new. With more going under the laser to solve issues with unwanted body hair than ever before thanks in part to falling prices.

Now those with fair skin and dark hair head the list of ideal candidates for this procedure. The laser beam can easily differentiate skin from follicle making the removal process more precise. Recent advances in laser technology also means darker skinned men and women may also avail themselves of this procedure - but it may take more than 3 sessions for the hair removal to be effective. Still it gives you an option besides electrolysis.

IMPORTANT: Time out in the sun, lying in a tanning bed or using spray on tans should be avoided before and after the procedure to be safe and avoid unpleasant side effects! Some have been known to get nasty burns because they spent time in the sun, didn't look like it, and failed to alert the person operating the laser.

Okay so laser hair removal takes a bit of prep. But not a lot. For example a few days before the procedure you will likely be advised to shave the area to be treated. Laser hair removal just needs but a few centimeters of hair to distinguish it from skin.

Your clinician should do a patch test to help them figure out the correct machine settings for your hair and skin type.

If you're worried about the pain involved, the technician may apply a topical anesthetic to the area to be treated. This could be done as soon as two hours prior to your session. But honestly, if you've survived waxing sessions, especially Brazilian waxing, you should be fine. Just keep in mind that thicker hair usually means increased discomfort. At least with the initial sessions.

Aspirin isn't advised usually. It can increase the chances of ugly bruising. Not the desired affect - especially if you're having facial work done.

To protect your eyes goggles should be provided to guard against exposure to the laser beam.

The light is then delivered through a hand held wand that the clinician moves gently over your skin. It's amazingly small compared to the power it wields.

How long a session takes depends on the amount of skin being treated. Typically you might spend 12-15 minutes under the wand for treatment of your lips or face. The bikini area might take 20-25 minutes. Full legs require something approaching an hour - each. Backs and chests may be even longer.

Don't be surprised if you make 4-8 return visits. Some lucky few can accomplish elimination of their unwanted follicles in as few as three treatments. But most will find it take four to eight treatment sessions to achieve the desired results.

Of course, the length of time and number of visits tends to vary according the area being treated and the density of the hair. So don't be surprised if coarser hair will also take more time to be removed.

Afterward it's not unusual for your skin to have a slight reddish cast to it. Much like a sunburn. That should take at the most no more than 24-48 hours to subside.

Some follow up maintenance treatments are not unusual either. "Touch ups", as they're called, will certainly beat your old waxing or shaving routine. Plus the costs of which should be quite affordable.

Anyway, the laser hair removal process, just as the name suggests, is a process that occurs over time. But it's likely a process you'll have to endure only once. After that you will enjoy sleek, silky, smooth skin for a long long time.
